For some reason all my icons, which are mostly shortcuts, have doubled up-I now have two of each icon. If I deleted one and restart my computer they both dissappear. Then when I restore from my recycle bin I get two of each again.
Gateway have suggested reinstalling Windows - I would appreciate other options first. Would also like to understand how this happened |

The shelliconcache file in your Windows folder may be corrupt (this has happened to me twice). This is a hidden file, so in order to see it, in windows explorer select view/folder options/view/show all files. You will now be able to see this file in your Windows folder. Cut and paste or move this file to a floppy disk or another folder other than the Windows folder. Reboot, and the shelliconcache file should renew itself and you should have one of each icon on your desktop. If that doesn't work, reinstate the copy of this file that you cut or moved as i outlined earlier, and have a look on the microsoft site in their knowledge base. |
