16275 2001-07-30 11:05:00 I am setting up my friends home network. He bought a Ni500 Adsl modem/router for his Jetstart connection, an 8 port 100/10 hub, a network card, and lots of cable. We have encountered various problems. (Not to mention his younger siblings). The Ni500, works fine (ie. the 'Ethernet' light on the modem lights up) when plugged straight into his Etherent card. But when plugged into the Hub, it does not, unless it is plugged into the Uplink port, which leads me to believe that the ethernet jack in the modem is crossed over. maybe using a crossover cable will help? Then... I sucessfully got his Jetstart connection running in Win2k, but under Win98, no hope. It seems to set all the correct settings, but tryign to ping the modem/routers IP, no good.
He also wants to share his internet connection, thru the hub, to an iMac in the house. I dare not even bring that up here <Grin>
Any help appreciated,

Seamus

16276 2001-07-30 23:24:00 Why not just multihome the 2k box if you say it works. Ni500 -->2k box-->hub--->client. Using win2k's ICS.

Service pack2 for also impliments for NAT in 2k so you can have a play round with that if you dont want to use ICS.

16277 2001-07-30 23:31:00 hi Seamus,

why wouldn't you want to plug it into the uplink port? it should be in there anyway...
Can the two workstations ping each other? how are you getting your LAN IP addresses, DHCP, or static? The gateway on all machines should be IP of the Ni500. There is no need for Internet Connection sharing as the Ni500 performs NAT. (Similar to ICS)

I would suggest you check out:

16278 2001-07-31 10:34:00 Well, that was the whole reason why he bought the ADSL modem/router; cos he didn't want to have to boot his computer up every time everyone else wanted to use the net. he is also dual booting to win98, where he plays his online games... so to him not really an option. I did already, however, suggest to him the idea of using a separate computer running linux as a gateway (eg. Coyote linux), but th ecost was going to be too great. (It would have made a nice print server too, sigh)
Thanx tho,

Seamus

16279 2001-07-31 10:39:00 I wasn't sure that it would be treated as a proper device if plugged into the uplink port, but I spose I could make up a crossover cable if i was to be picky (!)
But, when the Ni500 is plugged into the hub, and all is good (?), when I try to ping it, it timesout.
I assume that my LAN IP's are static (each is 192.168.7.x) and the Ni500 is always 192.168.7.1. I am unsure about the details of configuring the computers to connect thru the Ni500, as it is all done with a CD, and I can't find any specific instructions.
Thanx,
Seamus
