16470 2001-08-04 21:24:00 I posted the following (see below) two days ago and followed the advice given but still the problem exists. That is, I used RegClean and MSConfig to delete all references to Norton's AntiVirus. Before I try to backtrack (using Norton's RegTrack) with uninstalling-installing the new EZ Virus program, is there something else I could try? What exactly does NAV AUTO PROTECT mean anyhow? Original post follows:

Upon booting up, a red screen appears saying 'NAV AUTO PROTECT Unable to read configuration files.' Then I press 'Enter' which activates the 'OK' on the screen and Windows 98 boots up normally. What causes this? How can I get rid of it so that Win98 boots up without the red screen pause? Everything else works fine.
BACKGROUND: Yes, I did make some changes to the system, with getting rid of Norton's Antivirus which could NOT be uninstalled either via the Control Panel or using Clean Sweep or by re-installing Norton's Antivirus, etc. Whatever I did, Norton AntiVirus remained and it does NOT have an uninstall program!!

Norton's AntiVirus had to go since I was installing a better AntiVirus (Computer Associates EZ Virus) and it would not install unless Norton's was uninstalled. So, I just converted Norton's Antivirus to a zip file and deleted the start up using MSConfig. BUT upon booting, a white text on black screen DOS warning came up saying it could not find a device file for Windows in the registry: NAVAP.VXD (which is from Norton's AntiVirus). By 'pressing any key' Win98 booted up normally but still paused with the DOS warning everytime booting up. Therefore I simply put the NAVAP.VXD into a folder (otherwise empty) marked 'Norton AntiVirus' so that the device file registry problem was solved (it worked even though the rest of Norton's AntiVirus was missing).

The new EZ AntiVirus works fine. Independent tests show that it is more effective than Norton's and I am happy with it. But how do I get rid of the red screen pause upon booting?

What you are getting is BEFORE Windows starts up, so the first places to look are in your Autoexec.bat, and config.sys files and remark out any calls on Norton.
It isnt conceivable is it that Norton would write to your BIOS?? Surely not.. yet..

Terry, as I noted in my post, I did in fact do what you advise. Thanks anyhow.

16473 2001-08-05 08:34:00 as i mentioned earlier, reinstall antivirus(might pay to turn off any autoscanning when you get it running) then uninstall systemworks. you should be able to clean out the registry completly (as long as you don't have any other norton products). then check that the problem dosn't occur then reinstall systemworks minnus the antivirus. don't forget to run nortons update after install. 16474 2001-08-05 09:49:00 ...look for the Norton's 'Auto Protect' Key at the following Registry address where it can be deleted:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

Failing that, look in each of the following addresses:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServicesOnce

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Userinit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\RunOnce

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\RunServices

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\RunServicesOnce

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

16475 2001-08-05 11:04:00 You're obviously quite right on this Tweak, I didnt realise NAV was part of a suite of programs where you can only uninstall elements by wiping the lot, then selecting what you want on re-installation.

Anyway thats how one learns, thanks. Interesting to see the car analogy in your Comments posting.

So, Steve, maybe forget Smart Uninstall for this one, and do as Tweak says. SU is still a good program to have though.
