16453 2001-08-04 12:38:00 Hey....want to get game the halflife so as we can link our computers together via a lan...we are using a parallel cable and we have connected the 2 computers but when we run the game its says you cannot join using a different protocol. How can we fix this. Guest (0)
16454 2001-08-04 13:23:00 Got to Control Panel - Network and make sure each computer has a matching protocol like TCP/IP Guest (0)
16455 2001-08-09 23:06:00 spend a little mony and get 2 network cards and a crossover UTP cable, this will be much faster for Halflife game play. Also dont use halflife, get halflife addons like Counterstrike and other mods, these can be found by making a search on google.com. another thing you may want is a bot program since you only have 2 computers you will want more players, again search for halflife and download a bot program. Happy Gaming. :-) Guest (0)
16456 2001-08-10 06:05:00 Hi Captian Nema,
I'm a keen Half Life player as well, we have 6 PC's networked here at home and you can guess what we spend a lot of time doing :)

Trust me on this..
Go and buy 2 100Meg PCI Network Cards ($50 each approx) and a Crossover Cable of however long you need (UTP Cat5 with RJ45 connectors, the shop will know what your talking about).

Install them.
Once installed go to your Network Properties, right click on Network Neighbourhood/ Properties and..
*Change the Primary Network Logon to Windows Logon.
*Click on File and Printer Shareing, tick both boxes in there.
*Click Add/ double click Protocol/ click Microsoft/ double click on IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol (on the right window)
*Click Add/ double click Protocol/ click Microsoft/ double click NetBEUI (as above & scroll down a tad)
*Click the Identifictation tab at the top and make sure the Workgroup is Workgroup.
Restart.
Thats the networked card all sussed.

Now open My Computer and right click on your HD/HD's you want to share and click Shareing, in there make sure Shared As is ticked and Access Type is Read-Only.

Dont just use TCP/IP, its too slow, NetBEUI gives that a hurry up and IPX/SPX is one of the better and more common protocols for gamming. Your PC's are now allready to game on and they are all set up to go along to LAN's and play with the masses. To go to them you'll need a 'Straight Cable' to plug up to the Hub/Switch.

If you want to network more than the 2 PC's your going to need a Hub or a Switch and use 'Straight UTP Cat5 cable' instead of a 'Crossover cable'.

Other Half Life mod's out there include Counter Strike, Team Fortress, Front Line Forces, Science and Industry, Day of Defeat to name just a few.

For help with the games, pop in to http://www.nzfortress.co.nz and check out the forums.

If you need any help with setting up a network or are confused with anything give me a yell, ken_welch@hotmail.com or ICQ 6322581.
