16635 2001-08-07 07:21:00 I have a 20Gb hard disk I am attempting to defrag. It was last defragged about 79 days ago. All I've installed since then is Jbuilder 4 (thanks PC World), and a few wave files. But after 30 hours of defrag (using windows 98 defrag tool), it's only 2% of the way through. The disk is otherwise functioning normally. Any suggestions as to why this is, and how I can fix it would be most appreciated.
Thanks for any help!!!

16636 2001-08-07 09:13:00 1) Did you partition your disk? Partitioning your disk makes life much easier for Defrag, (since defragging a 20GB hard disk is not an easy task. Moreover, the speed of hard disks doesn't increase while the capacity increases in an exponential manner).

2) Are there any programs running in the background? Defrag restarts itself everytime something tries to access the same drive (this problem can be alleviated if you partition your drive). Shut down anything running in the background before you run defrag (press Ctrl-Alt Delete and End Task every process you see in the Close Program box except for systray and explorer).

16637 2001-08-07 09:35:00 It sounds like it isn't even starting as the first 10% is just checking for errors and reading the drive info.

In addition to the above, if your are using winME, disable the system restore backup thing
(system control panel, performance tab, file system button, trouble shooting tab, and put a tick beside disable system restore, or similar)

Or you could download PowerDefrag (www.powerdefrag.com)

Or failing that, reboot into safe mode and run it from there. Hold shift just before the computer starts booting Windows.

16638 2001-08-08 04:24:00 Install ENDITALL - it`s free and it works. It closes down every-thing except explorer & systray. It`s also great when installing programs etc. Just type 'ENDITALL' into any search engine and download.I also have a 20gig hard drive on Me & Nortons defrags it in less than 30 minutes. I do run it once a week. I havn`t tried windows defrag as nortons is much better ( so I have read many times in 'Press F1') Nortons Disc scan is also much faster than windows one too. Guest (0)
16639 2001-08-09 01:46:00 Thanks a lot everyone. Putting windows in safe mode worked. It defragged sweet!
I'll check out ENDITALL as well.
Cheers for your time,
Dan
