| 16771 | 2001-08-10 08:26:00 | I have a Nokia Ni500 ADSL router set up to operate via an 8 port hub. My primary computer runs W2K and connects via the hub at blinding speed. The Ni500 was originally installed direct to the ethernet card but I see no perceptible slow-down running through the hub. My secondary computer runs Win98 and after setting the IP address, default gateway, subnet mask and DNS IP's to the correct values I had Internet access via the Ni500 but at an absolute snails pace. Best I can get on a speed test is 42K which looks faster than dial-up but isn't quite what I expected. I set MTU to 1500 and Rwin to 17520 to match the fast computer and everything else seems to be the same. Pinging the Ni500 on the fast computer returns maximum ping times typically less than 10mS. The slow computer returns ping times of up to 1048mS, averages 500-600mS and sometimes times out. Fastest pings were sub-20mS but few and far between. The Nokia is a replacement for a 3Com Dual Link that was hell to install and although very fast on W2K, kept on dropping connections. I never tried to network it but when installed on the Win98 computer it was also very slow, averaging 10k download speeds and upload wasn't much better. The kindest thing I could say would be that it was so slow it hardly ever dropped a connection. My network card is of unknown type and uses NE2000 compatible drivers. I am beginning to wonder if it is faulty but before I rip it out and fit a new one I'd appreciate some advice, just in case I've overlooked some critical setting that is throttling it. |

The same screen on my W2K computer (which was downloading at full speed) showed the ethernet speed as 10,000,000. I've looked for a way to find out the speed setting of the network card and to reset it if possible but can't find any way to acccess that data. I'm not very clued up on network matters so ABC level advice might be needed. | Guest (0) | ||
