16777 2001-08-10 07:04:00 I was wondering if the PC Company made decent computers. I'm on the verge of buying a AMD Athlon 1.4GHz from them but have been holding back since I heard a few 'bad' stories about them. Any dealings with them - or perhaps satisfied owners? Guest (0)
16778 2001-08-10 08:44:00 Their computers are far better than what HP, Compaq et al make. A friend bought an HP about 4 months ago for ~$3000, despite my warning, and my 2.5 year old comp beats it in evey game we tested.

As for PC company I dont think their any better worse than any other local OEMs. The only bad stuff I've heard about them was they refused to sell a PC without windows on it, although this is probably more microsofts fault.

16779 2001-08-10 08:47:00 I bought a PC (AMD Athlon 1.3GZ ) a few months ago and am very pleased with the PC and overall deal. Only problem I had I emailed their help desk and got a quick imformative response.
You could do a lot worse!!

16780 2001-08-10 09:02:00 HP computers aint bad, probably the main reason you beat it in games is because the video in HP's is usually pretty pathetic. Guest (0)
16781 2001-08-10 09:33:00 Id have to say that when buying a base system, I have yet to see many places that offer the value that the PC Company does. Despite technically voiding my warranty by installing components myself, they still offer quality support when the proverbial hits the fan. Only hardware problem I had was a bust floppy drive, and they didnt waste a moment of my time by trying to fix it, they just gave me a new one and fixed the old one on their own time, in and out in 15 min with a fully working system.
I personally would definately go back to them when looking for a full system.

16782 2001-08-10 10:02:00 Well you said it there b m, integrated video usually isn't up to much.

Thing bout PC Company is they sell alot of pc's in NZ as they are the highest selling local manufacturer so obviously you will hear some bad stories, but as long as you are happy with the system specs and have the warranty to back it up you should be ok.

16783 2001-08-10 10:25:00 Just remeber,if you buy a pc
company pc ,you will only get restore disks and when you want upgrade your harddrive ,the restore disks
won,t work,so you,ll have to buy a new os as well.

16784 2001-08-10 11:09:00 depends what OS you want to use... not all you have to buy. Guest (0)
16785 2001-08-12 20:57:00 Boris. You are wrong. If you make any changes to your system you are fine. It is comments like yours that do damage to local OEM's. Maybe some have a system where by if you change things the recovery does not work But they would be insane to have it set up like that . The Recovery CD that comes with all PC CO Pcs has a standard BIOS lock so that it cannot be used in an other machine for Piracy protection. This has windows on it including the add on's . IE the back up option etc. Thanks Guest (0)
16786 2001-08-16 03:35:00 Just before this posting drops off the page, thought I'd make a comment or two. Everyone has made valid points.
If you are into building your own, then I'd go along with Boris. If you buy a motherboard and CPU then you will usually entitle yourself to buy an OEM software pack too. Thats what Ive had since Win95.
Boris is right, restore disks are a cop-out. If you've paid your money then you should be entitled to a full software package AS WELL AS restore disks that make the job easier for non-computer literate folk.
Your local friendly corner assembler/seller is still generally good value for money, as long as you ask around first to see how well they support their customers.

The big problem with the brand names is upgrading/replacing parts at the same price and convenience as 'clones'.

PC General folded because they sourced the cheapest possible parts, and reliability suffered. So if you buy locally do your homework first and get something to YOUR specification.

When XP comes along, there will probably be a big swing to Linux if MS persist with their registration policy. Maybe now is also the time to stock up with Win98SE OEM Win2000!
