16711 2001-08-08 08:35:00 Windows 98 has been fine for over 2 years, except for one thing. Now I cannot update Windows from the Microsoft web site, and not from a (magaizine) CD either. All that happens is that when I go to the web site (after clicking 'update' via the Start button) is that the page remains blank. I seem to remember a script error message that popped up once but did not write down the error wording. Even if I use a CD with the updates/patches on it, the page remains blank. All other web browsing works fine, and yes, I have even tried using Netscape.

One suggestion is that I should reinstall Win98 over the top of my system (using the same Win98 disk of course), but won't this really mess up the systme completely? I sure do not want to reformat my hard drive!

Does Microsoft have a help desk that I can send an email to, or a search facility on their Windows Help site (or whatever it may be called)?

16712 2001-08-08 09:02:00 Two years is pretty old. There is a saying that went around a while ago:
Having an 8 month old install of windows is like wearing the same underwear for 8 months.

A reinstall ontop of the oly install can fix some problems, but since it is only replacing files, it usually doesn't fix most thinks, and compared to a clean install is a lot of work for little reward.

You don't have to format the hdd to do a clean reinstall. Until I got my cdwriter I would copy all my documents, and settings I waned to keep to a folder, eg C:\BACKUP, and delete every thing else, reboot to DOS, and finish it off. Then I could do a reinstall from there.

16713 2001-08-08 11:35:00 Clarification: I have regularly updated Win98 with the various patches, etc. - but not recently due to the problem mentioned in my original post. Also, Win98 has been 'cleaned' and 'refreshed' with Norton's System Works, etc. So the underwear has been washed :-) BTW, a friend of mine has Win95 from ages ago and he is fastidiously clean, and his computer system works perfectly.
