| 17102 | 2001-08-16 22:41:00 | Hello I've been using Netscape 4.01 for yonks. Last night there must have been some file corruption because when I clicked on the icon for my e-mail inbox the page half loaded and then locked up the computer. I ran a virus check on the hard drive, then Norton Disc doctor and then Norton Speed disk. Two or more hours later the situation was still the same so I called xtra. I tried to explain wahat had happened, that there must have been some file corruption - I could still access the Internet. There response was that I must upgrade the Browser to IE 5.5. I asked them if IE would pick up my address book and bookmarks etc and the reply I got was that it was a bit of a lottery. I actually rang them again to get a different bloke and he said the same (only this time he wasn't as helpful about getting the upgrade CD - I'm an hour's drive from the nearest Noel Leeming, Dick Smith etc) So the question is this - is there a foolproof way of exporting my Netscape e-mail data to IE5.5/Outlook 97. I'm running Win 98 2nd edition Thanks in Advance John Waihi |

Go to file then Import/Export then Import Internet Mail and Addresses then follow through the prompts. As for the latest version of IE5.5 can be got from the cd that comes with the PC World magazine. The only thing is you would have to setup for internet settings manually, which isn't to difficult. Let me know how you get on. Eric |

The reason Xtra only supports the most recent IE is because they are too lazy to do decent support, and also because they are now basically MSNnz. And microsoft doesn't play nicely with others. Also If you are running an older comp, IE5.5 will add heaps of bloat to your computer. Especially if you are running Win95. If you want to try and fix netscape, the first place to check would the the plugins folder, heaps of plugins get added, and many of them are buggy. Startup netscape, goto About-Plugins, and make a note of the file name of any plugins that you don't want, then rename them to .dll.bak, so they aren't run by netscape. |

The next time you light the wick Netscape will replace your inbox with one that should be squeaky clean. Upgrade to Netscape 4.72 or 3 any later and they seem to lose the plot again, but Explorer over Netscape? you gotta be kidding! |

Things are still a bit unstable - I've been virus cheking like mad - but I think I'm on top of it now. So, Yaboo sux to IE 5.r and Xtra, and thanks once again John Waihi |

If you don't want to use Outbreak Express you could try Eudora (www.eudora.com), it will import your Netscape messages. If you do choose OE, get all the security patches, and turn the internet security options to high security. Outlook Express will probably end up causing a lot of problems for you. |
