17097 2001-08-16 19:29:00 Has anybody tried Netscape 6.1 for Linux,

I decided to download Netscape 6.1 it is about 20 meg for the fill version, at first it said it would take about 1 hour and ? but took more than 4 hours all together in about three sessions, the download always starts off at about 3.4 K bit/sec and always gets slower and slower down to about 1.2 K bit/sec
normally the Linux version of any program is a load of crap (apart from Star Office 5.2, which is just as good if not better than windows) but I was pleased that Netscape 6, was better than any of the 4.x series,

From what I have seen so far it is not so bad, the start up logo comes on almost straight away compared to 6.0 (I was never sure the program had started using 6.0 and gave it away as a bad joke and went back to IE #5)

Below is part information on the browser from my javascript program
browser is Netscape 5
Mozilla version is 5.0
userAgent = Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:0.9.2) Gecko/20010726 Netscape6/6.1

Strange how the version is 5.0 and not 5.1

17098 2001-08-17 03:00:00 I've got Mozilla 0.8 that came with Mandrake, Mozilla is what NS6 is based on. Which is why the user/agent reads Mozilla 5.0, as it is only the NS version that is called 6.1.

The most recent, 0.9.3 is newer then NS6.1, and more stable.

Also the Mozilla version is less bloated than the Netscape version and is at most 11MB to download (www.mozilla.org).

17099 2001-08-20 22:49:00 Linux versions are really bad (I still haven't tried latest mozzila browser).

Suggestion is to get the KDE 2 and use Konqueror, or to download Opera for Linux. Konqueror still needs a bit of work but runs fairly well on my RH 7.1.

Opera is good - small download, runs fast and ads (on a free version) are not that bad.
