17176 2001-08-18 09:23:00 Recently, I added a 20GB hard disk plus more memory to my PC. (This may not be the cause of the following problem).

Now when I connect my Sony Cyber Shot camera, Windows detects new hardware and tries to install the appropriate drivers. This always causes a crash:
Error: cmdninst has caused an error in USER.EXE. cmdninst will now close.

To try and solve this, in Safe mode, I have first disabled and then removed the appropriate hardware/drivers for the camera. None of this solved the problem - got the same message.

I have searched various parts of the internet without much success.

Your help will be appreciated!

17177 2001-08-18 09:43:00 Have a look at support.microsoft.com

Boot into safe mode and in device manager remove any hardware that you don't have.
Maybe you previous HD if it was removed?

17178 2001-08-18 09:43:00 If you reinstalled windows during the upgrade then you might need to reinstall all the patches at WindowsUpdate.

Google also turned up this:

17179 2001-08-18 10:13:00 Yes, I used that Microsoft Support reference to the letter. Windows software is fully up to date - just rechecked via Windows Update.

Will await other comments. Thanks for your help so far.
