| 17286 | 2001-08-20 08:50:00 | Thx to those who replied to my previous posting ....there's just a few things I would like to clarify before I patch things up for my network .... 1) How do I select a protocal as default? 2) Is Net Beui any good?? What is it for?? Does it work with ICS?? 3) Should the other comp be off when I m setting up the network on each comp? I know that it's necessary to have ur client comp off when setting up ICS... 4) What's the difference between window's log on and the client log on? 5) Is Net Beui faster than Tcp//Ip?? Is it just faster at connecting or will I get better ping when I play a LAN game? Thx again for those who helped...I really appreciated..!! REEALLY!! |

| 17287 | 2001-08-20 09:44:00 | Hi 1) How do I select a protocal as default? Right click the network neighbourhood icon on you desktop. Select properties, select (click once) the favoured protocol and click the properties tab. Should then be an 'advanced' tab, where you will have the option to select this as the default protocol. 2) Is Net Beui any good?? What is it for?? Does it work with ICS?? I read that net beui was the microsoft basic network setup and easy to configure but slower. ZD Net (www.zdnet.com) suggests using tcp/ip as default as it's quicker, after doing this I agree. I can access the net from the other computer using a proxy server program - tcp/ip is perfect for this. 3) Should the other comp be off when I m setting up the network on each comp? I know that it's necessary to have ur client comp off when setting up ICS... When you change network settings you have to reboot anyway so I would suggest setting up each identically individually, then connect the two and see what happens. 4) What's the difference between window's log on and the client log on? From what I understand: Windows log on shares your general windows settings while you can set up and maintain differnet users (with separate passwords) on the same pc with the client for ms networks log on. 5) Is Net Beui faster than Tcp//Ip?? Is it just faster at connecting or will I get better ping when I play a LAN game? I find TCP/IP faster - others may have different results. It helps removing any protocols you are not using too. As in previous posts - assigning a static ip addy to the ethernet card on each PC will help them find each other. |

| 17288 | 2001-08-20 11:20:00 | netbeui is designed for lans and tcp/ip is designed for internet. install netbeui for you printer and file sharing and tcp/ip for your internet and ics. most games these days use tcp/ip for lans as well as internet. a few old ones use ipx/spx only, no need to install ipx/spx unless you play a game that requires it. PLEASE SEE grc.com so you can keep the netbeui away from the net.(if you have been following pcworlds articles you'll know how easy it is for someone to gain entry via the file sharing) |
