17145 2001-08-18 03:12:00 Why does it take so long for the dial-up box to open when I start Outlook Express? I notice that on some computers it comes up straightaway. Guest (0)
17146 2001-08-18 07:14:00 If I recall, there is an option to get OE to check for email at startup, as well as every X minutes. Have a look in the options under checking, or similar.

Another cause may be your computer being slower/ having less ram, so it takes longer to load the dial up programme.
Also if the other computers had just been on the internet, then the dialup programme would still be in memory.

17147 2001-08-18 10:07:00 OE is set to check for mail on startup. I have 128Mb of RAM so I don't think that's the problem. Guest (0)
17148 2001-08-19 00:36:00 ...should you have one running in the background, a Virus Checker (utility) will slow things down.

Considerably, in fact.

When disabled, you might find a speed increase of up to 2/thirds.

TIP: some users only enable their Virus Checker on connection to the Internet and when opening e-mail and downloaded files, prefering to scan their systems once a day as a routine.

Apart from a considerable increase in system performance, this has several advantages ... obscure system crashes (often caused by conflict/s with a virus checker) become a thing of the past.

Cheers!!!
