17446 2001-08-23 01:01:00 This is only a recent problem I've had on my computer (Laptop) and one that is rather critcal. When I put any CD Rom into the drive (which were fine before), I keep getting the same message as follows: 'This Application could not start as it could not create needed files. There may not be enough free disk space'.
I actually have stacks of free space though, (6.60 Gb) with 77% free Ram resources (128 Mb total). I've looked at the Device Manager but it does not show any problem with the CD Rom drive. In the preformance tab, the cache is set to 'Large' and access speed is set to 'Quad speed or higher'. Also DMA is enabled. Can anyone please help as I want my CD Rom back! Thanks in advance.

17447 2001-08-23 04:37:00 Hi. First thing I'd try would be:
Remove cd in Device Manager.
Switch off pc and remove drive physically.
Switch on PC.
Switch off PC and re-fit the drive.
Reinstall driver software.
Good luck.

17448 2001-08-23 08:47:00 I know you say 'when I put ANY CD', but do you really mean ANY? I just wondered whether it's possible that whatever CD it is that you are inserting is autolaunching something that is actually trying to create a file or files on the CD itself ... which of course is read only so it won't be able to.

Another possibility is that you don't have a 'temp' or 'tmp' environment variable set up (or the directory it points to has been deleted), and that whatever is autolaunching is therefore trying to write to the current directory on the CD instead of the temp directory.

To check this, go to a DOS prompt, and type 'set'. Look for a line that says 'tmp=c:\temp' (or some other directory) and/or 'temp-c:\temp'.

Does this happen if you insert a music CD?

17449 2001-08-23 09:06:00 Try checking your running processes.

Use Ctrl-Alt-Delete to end task eveything but explorer and systray.

Then try using an audio cd, then a data cd.

Hold down shift when you insert them, as this will disable auto insert notification.

17450 2001-08-23 18:12:00 Thanks Mark. You are correct, my temp files and folder were deleted. I am not so skilled in computing so I asked a friend to clean up the disk for me and then admitted to have done this. Could you tell me please how I get this temp folder back again for the CD to write to? Guest (0)
