17429 2001-08-22 21:03:00 Man that MS crowd never ceases to amaze. This time its a security hole the size of a planet. Owners of the upcoming WinXP will be safe though - as long as you never connect to the internet! WinNT & Win2000 you might want to check this out too.
Hackers grab your popcorn its going to be a party ye ha.

17430 2001-08-22 21:48:00 Hi Or,

sorry to have to say this...but: What rock have you been living under for the last 8 months? Steve Gibson has been ranting on about this Raw sockets crap bring the internet down with massive DoS attacks for yonks. As for being an Administrator by default, why not? XP is designed to bring home users into the NT fold. As for corporate users of XP, they will nail the boxes down like they always have done. Steve seems to think that all 9x boxes will suddenly be upgraded to XP overnight, creating a vast army of Zombies to DoS him off the face of the earth. I would like Raw sockets support without having to install WinPcap, so go Microsoft!

17431 2001-08-22 23:42:00 Give the guy the credit he deserves. As a security specialist he is bringing to attention a serious potential for malicious use of O/S's and the internet whose agianst stopping that. Guest (0)
17432 2001-08-22 23:47:00 same rock anon is under;-)

'Steve seems to think that all 9x boxes will suddenly be upgraded to XP overnight' actually steve said 'over the next two years' think about it all new pc's are going to start comeing out with xp. a newbie will buy it and use it like most newbies do without a thought of protection for themselves or others. nice and easy to infect. with the right trojens it will only take a handfull of infected pc to shut out any buisness internet connection.

'I would like Raw sockets support without having to install WinPcap, so go Microsoft!' thats fine for an IT but most home uses have never had and will never need rawsockets, so why have them. most IT's have enough brains to be able to 'turn on' the rawsockets if required.

'As for corporate users of XP, they will nail the boxes down like they always have done.' concidering the embaressment IT pros have had with code red(there are STILL infected IT servers, groan), how can home uses expect to be secure when the pros can't even do it.

the last word- microsoft is going to launch xp with full rawsockets enabled as default. we shall see over the coming years if this is going to be another classic microsoft bludder or just a lot of hot air for nothing. time will tell.

17433 2001-08-23 03:42:00 Steve Gibson is clueless, all he's after is publicity. The only thing that makes him a security specialist is his web page. Guest (0)

17435 2001-08-23 08:28:00 I think Steve Gibson is a smart guy and his site is very interesting and informative, but yes he can be a bit over the top at times
but he least he makes the otherwise highly technical topics readable for the average pc user.
