2001-08-22 06:04:00 | The discussion threads seem to load in about 2-4 seconds where as before they would always take at least 10 if not 20 seconds. Has my modem gone into overdrive or has someone else noticed this?

Not sure about your modem, but the site has been redesigned and I think the web-bot search engine hounds have been kept at bay lately too. These seemed to be overloading the server. I think the slow speed was the main cause of quite a few multiple posts a few weeks back, people weren't sure if the mail had gotten through. |

2001-08-22 07:13:00 | sure have. i used to have a 20-30sec wait before the page would even start to download. since putting in a host file(last week) to block the add servers it now downloads instantly. ;-) | Guest (0) | |

2001-08-23 00:18:00 | Glad you are all finding things faster. For the record, it has nothing to do with blocking the ads. James McNickel has implemented a system whereby the thread pages are written out as static rather than dynamic pages - this is responsible for the speed boost. As for blocking ads - all I can say is that IDG New Zealand employs 5 people full-time in the development and management of it's online business, including myself. Contrary to what some people may think, those salaries are not, and cannot be supported by the print side of our business. Advertising is not the only way we make money online but it is one of them. I would remind you that we do not charge for any of these online services, nor do we want to follow the example of Stuff.co.nz, which is going to charge for archives. So by blocking the ads, you are denying us income we use to pay for our jobs. It's that simple. I hope you enjoy your ad-free Internet .... Bruce Buckman Manager Web Development

2001-08-24 00:05:00 | Is this fast?? I hate to think how slow it must have been before the improvements. I use an ADSL line and this is consistently the slowest site I visit. Sure some sites are slow at busy times, but IDGNet/Press F1 gets the Crippled Turtle Award for on-going access frustration. The speed is never much better than dial-up, pages can take 20-30 seconds to load and I've had server time-outs on some threads. Before I noticed this post I was about to contact IDG and ask what the problem was.
