17352 2001-08-21 07:01:00 My 50x CD-ROM drive has failed to recognize EVERY CD I pop into it. Is that thing dead already? Should I start shopping for a new drive? I have been changing CD-ROM drives about once a year. I wonder what if there's an external factor that's affecting my drive's performance.

P.S. My computer detects the drive fine. So, it's not a software problem. It can't even play music Cds.

Also get a lens cleaner CD (~$20), especially if you use a lot of dirty disks, or the computer is in a dusty room.

17354 2001-08-22 01:03:00 This is a common problem.
What brand of CD-Rom drive are you using?
I have found that many of the cheaper drives (any that you can get for around $70) are no good. They simply refuse to read all discs, only some.
Many of these are sold through the 'discount' computer parts places and are sourced through cheap Taiwanese and Asian distributors.

In the end it is better to spend a little more and buy a known brand name such as Samsung, Sony, Plextor etc.
