Despite following the usual advice of 3-fingured' salutes or running it in Safe Mode, their problems persist. Many give up and use good Third Party alternatives. There is another way. In response to an earlier posting on this board from JM, i posted the following tip which comes courtesy of a favourite e-zine. ------------------------------ TIP...Users running Windows9x will find a *huge* improvement in performance if they use the Defrag Utility that comes bundled with Windows ME. Some observers have commented that this function is the only improvement that ME has over the Win9x OS. The ME Defrag Utility runs on Windows 9x and can be downloaded free (98kb/Winzipped) from the following site: surecool.com ------------------------------ ...i would make the following comments: (i) reboot your system before running (ii) have a look at the 'Read Me.txt' - and the 'Read First' link on download page (iii) this baby R-O-C-K-S Cheers!!! e_ |

Which is great because installing Cygwin really slowed down the 98 defragger (it has 6-10000 files). My personal tip is to run the defragger in safe mode because there are less open files (the squares marked red), so more of the disk get defragged , I think it also does the swap file if you use a static swapfile. |
