17541 2001-08-24 22:42:00 I have read and heard that, when documents are deleted and/or sent to the rubbish tin (which is subsequently emptied),they are not entirely lost. My problem is that a couple of weeks ago I deleted some files that I now find I need (silly boy for not backing up). How can I locate these files if they are not, in fact entireley 'washed out of the system'? Thanks in anticipation of your assistance. Guest (0)
17542 2001-08-25 04:39:00 there are basic recovery tools like nortons unerase for eg. however if you have used the computer a lot since they were deleted they may be overwriten. if u have defragged then forget it. unless you want to spend big $$$ to get a professional firm to do it. you can recover almost anything on a disk even if its been over writen it all comes down to $$$. 17543 2001-08-25 08:59:00 What happens when you delete a file (In old Dos, depends on your version of Windows)is that the first letter of the file name is given the character '?'. There are some programs which can Resurrect such a file but only if it has not been overwritten in which case it is bye bye to that file and it doesn't matter how many dollars you have. The program I remember is 'undelete.exe'. Try a search on the net. Guest (0)

it is possable to recover data even after it has been overwriten. drive manafactures and speciality firms have the tools and technology to do so.
harddrives are some what crude at writing to and reading from the disk. even when data is overwriten it still leaves a faint image behind and with the right tools this can be read off and recontructed. hence if you don't want someone to get your very valuable data destroy the harddrive.
