17520 2001-08-24 09:50:00 Hi all,system is a PC direct 690 discovery Pentium 2 - 233mhz,64mb ram,6.4gb hdd,win98se.Motherboard is microstar ms-6117 ver:1 with award bios.
Problem is when the kids are playing their favourite game 'My Favourite Monster'.
The computer keeps locking up,I have tried windows updates & tried different ram & another cd-rom & swapped the ps/2 mouse for a serial mouse,I have tried different settings in the bios including defaults. In desperation i even went back to orig win98 :(
This game is basic & doesnt require directx & it used to play fine on a 486 with win95,also we tried game on a friends p-166 & they played it for 2hrs without problems.
I have checked motherboard site for bios upgrades but i'm not sure which upgrade applys. thanks in advance for any suggestions Or ideas,
cheers steve.
Ps:there are no conflicts showing in device manager.

17521 2001-08-25 01:34:00 Just a stab in the dark here, but try downloading the latest vid card drivers from your card's manufacturer.
Also, check for patches from the game's author (if it's not too old).

17522 2001-08-26 05:49:00 thanks, The video card had the latest drivers so I have installed another video card & touch wood it has worked ok so far(about an hour this morning without a crash).
I formatted & reinstalled win98se & since I replaced the video card the computer shuts down & restarts properly without the micosoft shutdown patch, funnily enough with the other video card the computer didnt always shutdown Or restart properly even with shutdown patch applied.
cheers steve
