| 17461 | 2001-08-23 04:37:00 | My 3 year old P C Direct computer is slowing up. During that process, these programs are loaded - explorer, bigfix, real play, savenow, rundll, point32,srstray, systray, navapw32, rnapp, nsched32 - are all these necessary & I have been unable to discover their individual purpose. Bigfix & real player are only needed occasionly - cannot I open them when needed. | Guest (0) | ||

The problem with a lot of these programs is that when you install them they install themselves in your system tray (have a look down in the bottom left of your screen - see a RealPlayer icon). And the program loads itself when your machine starts up. The solution is to do the following: 1) Check in the programs startup menu and remove any programs not required to be running all the time 2) Check any system tray icons, and look for the ability to customise the startup options. With Real Player for instance you can right click on the icon to get to the properties of Real Player (somewhere) in the properties you will find something like 'Autoload' or 'Load on startup' - uncheck the box and RealPlayer will not load when your machine starts. It will still retain its file associations so will launch when you click on RealPlayer files fine. Another thing you can do to improve startup time is defragment your disk - which can give good improvements in speed if you haven't done it for a while. To do this, go into accessories > System Tools > Disk defragmenter, and run the defragement program. It can take a while ... HTH |

RNAPP is only loaded when you use dialup networking, so don;t worry about it. savenow soulds like a screen saver runner that I had a while ago, which you probably dont need. rundll, is being used to load somthing else, you will have to look in your startup to see what. point32, is the intelli mouse program, you don't really gainm much by running it. navapw32, and nsched32, sound like somthing to do with nortan antivirus, if it is you can disable the active scanning (where is scanns files as you use them) as it slows you system down heaps for little gain. I'm not sure about bigfix, and srstray, but I doubt you need them. |
