1278146 2012-05-29 04:13:00 I'm thinking of finally putting together a collection of free programs that are great for fixing a stuffed machine or removing a virus, after a year of so of having been 'going to do it'.

Any suggestions?

1278148 2012-05-29 04:23:00 Linux Live cd/dvd is handy to have. Hijackthis, so you can post a log. As long as you can get into windows / safe mode. Teamviewer for remote access. If you can get into windows. Other people can help you out remotely.

Tdsskiller for rootkits. If you can get into windows. There's an AVG / Kaspersky rescue cd (you download the ISO then burn it - I think there's a flash drive option too) for viruses. Came across one the other day. Eset Rogue App Remover. I think it removes all of these fake rogue programs. Which say you're infected with something when youre not. Or your hdd is dying or something

It depends what you mean by stuffed. If its covered in malware / viruses (if you cant get into windows), the easiest thing to do is to reformat the hdd

1278150 2012-05-29 04:28:00 Trouble is if you collect it all now and then in a couple of months you need to use it all the software will need updating again.

Something like a bootable disk with Memtest, and hard drive checking /recovery software of some kind, then a collection of tools
Memtest
MBAM
Speccy
MSE installer
realtemp
prime 95
Furmark
Spybot

etc. There are probably a lot of programs people could suggest.

1278151 2012-05-29 04:31:00 By stuffed, I mean anything from malware - with no backup up course - to a deleted registry file to someone who can't access windows. Basically anything a tech useless family member can do. Nick G (16709)
1278152 2012-05-29 04:34:00 Well microsoft's AV program does a pretty good job. A windows cd/dvd will probably help too. If you accidentally delete reg entries / if you get missing windows file errors / messages. Altho, if you dont know what youre doing in the registry, dont use regedit Speedy Gonzales (78)

1278154 2012-05-29 05:49:00 Put MSE down as the av you install afterwards :) and ccleaner is always good to have. icow (15313)
