| 1254679 | 2012-01-17 14:36:00 | On TV: Just announced is a Draconian law concerning rights of publishers and The Wiki threatens to shut down if this new law goes into effect . SOPA and PIPA are being protested::: Wikipedia Blackout . It is the opinion of the English Wikipedia community that both of these bills, if passed, would be devastating to the free and open web . Over the course of the past 72 hours, over 1800 Wikipedians have joined together to discuss proposed actions that the community might wish to take against SOPA and PIPA . This is by far the largest level of participation in a community discussion ever seen on Wikipedia, which illustrates the level of concern that Wikipedians feel about this proposed legislation . The overwhelming majority of participants support community action to encourage greater public action in response to these two bills . Of the proposals considered by Wikipedians, those that would result in a blackout of the English Wikipedia, in concert with similar blackouts on other websites opposed to SOPA and PIPA, received the strongest support . On careful review of this discussion, the closing administrators note the broad-based support for action from Wikipedians around the world, not just from within the United States . The primary objection to a global blackout came from those who preferred that the blackout be limited to readers from the United States, with the rest of the world seeing a simple banner notice instead . We also noted that roughly 55% of those supporting a blackout preferred that it be a global one, with many pointing to concerns about similar legislation in other nations . . org/wiki/English_Wikipedia_anti-SOPA_blackout" target="_blank">wikimediafoundation . org |

| 1254680 | 2012-01-17 20:54:00 | According to Cnet Google is also joining the protest against this, but not with a "black out". Instead they will be just linking information about the bill on the front page. The company confirmed in a statement that it will join Wikipedia, Reddit, and other influential tech firms in staging protests of varying kinds against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA), which are backed by big entertainment and media interests. news.cnet.com |

| 1254682 | 2012-01-17 23:37:00 | The US Freedom Of Information Act allows me by license to post the following::: SOPA/PIPA talk: Wikipedia blackout, Twitter CEO, Rupert Murdoch, more: Theres plenty of talk about the controversial legislation (the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP Act) that at worst would give the U . S . government unprecedented power to shut down websites accused of copyright infringement of movies and more . The fight pits the music and entertainment industries and their allies against many Silicon Valley companies and public advocacy groups . Over the weekend, the White House finally weighed in, and so did Rupert Murdoch . The Twitterverse is abuzz . Lets dive in . Wikipedia said last night that it would shut down its English-language website Wednesday as it takes part in Stop American Censorship Day ( . newsletters . siliconvalley . com/xhbghrcmjjgtbqvstplbvtnmkntgylkbyprlqyrdgppgcsg_xp" target="_blank">click1 . newsletters . siliconvalley . com dpchrpvbvb . html), a strike to protest the proposed legislation . Other sites that have vowed to go dark tomorrow include Reddit and Boing Boing . Twitter CEO Dick Costolo seemed to call Wikipedias planned SOPA protest blackout tomorrow silly: Closing a global business in reaction to single-issue national politics is foolish, he tweeted yesterday . But he later clarified to Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales that he was only referring to Twitter in response to explicit tweet suggesting we lacked courage for not shutting down . Costolo says Twitter has made its position clear: It is part of a long list of Silicon Valley companies ( . newsletters . siliconvalley . com/uwgywncdppysfkqmsgbfqszdvzsyjbvfjgnbkjnhyggycmq_xp" target="_blank">click1 . newsletters . siliconvalley . com dpchrpvbvb . html) opposed to the legislation . In a tweet, Wales says of Costolo: Actually he was misinterpreted . Twitter is still cool . News Corp . founder, CEO and Chairman Rupert Murdoch was also in on the action over the weekend, going after both President Obama, whose administration has just spoken out against some aspects of the copyright legislation, and Google Murdoch said on Twitter ( . newsletters . siliconvalley . com/ivggvmcfnngwdqhzwbkdhwtfptwgrkpdrbmkqrmygbbgczd_xp" target="_blank">click1 . newsletters . siliconvalley . com dpchrpvbvb . html), which he recently joined: Obama has thrown in his lot with Silicon Valley paymasters who threaten all software creators with piracy, plain thievery . Of Google, one of the most vocal opponents of SOPA, Murdoch said in a series of tweets: Piracy leader is Google who streams movies free, sells [advertisements] around them . No wonder pouring millions into lobbying . And Understand more than all allege! Google great company doing many exciting things . Only one complaint, and its important . He said he searched Google for Mission Impossible, and Wow, several sites offering free links . I rest my case . The White Houses position, conveyed in a blog post Saturday, said in part that we will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet, is an obstacle for SOPA and PIPA . The White House, especially Vice President Joe Biden, had previously talked tough on piracy, and Saturdays statement did reiterate that the administration saw a need for legislative action . ( . newsletters . siliconvalley . com/jrfsjvndqqswmkrfwthmrwzdczwsphcmptvhkpvbsttsnff_xp" target="_blank">click1 . newsletters . siliconvalley . com dpchrpvbvb . html)) Reuters ( . newsletters . siliconvalley . com/xvjghrcmjjgtbqvstplbvtnmkntgylkbyprlqyrdgppgcsc_xp" target="_blank">click1 . newsletters . siliconvalley . com dpchrpvbvb . html) reports that with the White House finally weighing in, the authors of the legislation will have some reworking to do . The Senate is scheduled to take a vote on PIPA Jan . 24 . SOPA author Rep . Lamar Smith, R-Texas, who on Thursday appeared to take a hard line (see Quoted: SOPA author digs in ( . newsletters . siliconvalley . com/nwdwfdkzrrwnpmyjnthpynczgcnwbhgpbtdhmbdqwttwkkw_xp" target="_blank">click1 . newsletters . siliconvalley . com dpchrpvbvb . html)), reportedly ( . newsletters . siliconvalley . com/rjkjnglqttjpvbrwpkfvrphqyhpjsfyvskgfbsgcjkkjllc_xp" target="_blank">click1 . newsletters . siliconvalley . com dpchrpvbvb . html) said Friday that he would drop the provision that would have required Internet service providers to block websites accused of infringement . This is getting nasty . |
