| 17768 | 2001-08-29 03:19:00 | Attempted to restore a regestry backup as advised in your forum,(command prompt - scanreg/restore etc),but got a 'unable to complete operation' message. Tried a different backup but got the same message. Easy enough process, but couldn't complete the job - why?. Wondered if I can restore a regestry backup by simply unzipping one of the .cab files in the C:Windows/sysbckup folder?. Any hints? - Running straight win98. Thanks in advance :) |

Scanreg will not work from a dos prompt window because the files you are trying to replace are already in use. If you have winzip installed then you can open the cab files in the sysbckup folder, extract the files system.dat and user.dat. Exit windows and restore the files by copying them to the windows folder. |

If you are not running profiles go to a Dos promt and delete 'User.dat' and 'system.dat' in the Windows directory(or rename them) and then copy 'user.da0' and 'System.da0' to there dat equivalent. This will only work if you have not tried a reboot or two as they are usually the last successfull backups of your settings. |
