| 17649 | 2001-08-26 10:52:00 | I have been dual booting a AMD 233 with Win 98 and Linux RedHat for several years. I print to a old black Epson Stylus 300 ESC/P2 using the supplied Epson Stylus 800 ESC/PS2 filter - it has been working fine. Recently I bought an upgrade kit (AMD Duron 850) and changed to using Linux only. I am having difficulty in getting the printer to work again! The following points are noted: 1. I use the RedHat Printtool to set up printing. 2. I can print directly to the printer port (lp0) from Printtool or from the command line (indicating it's not a hardware fault). 3. Printing a test page in Printtool via ASCII or PostScript results in no printing - message 'Test page printed to lp' but no page prints. 4. I have restarted lpd. 5. Checking the print queue immediately after printing (using lpq) reveals no print job waiting. 6. Looking at the /var/log/messages file reveals the following. The device not present may be a clue? Aug 26 21:45:44 AMD850@davey lpd: lpd shutdown succeeded Aug 26 21:45:45 AMD850@davey kernel: parport0: PC-style at 0x378 [SPP] Aug 26 21:45:45 AMD850@davey kernel: parport0: no IEEE-1284 device present. Aug 26 21:45:45 AMD850@davey kernel: lp0: using parport0 (polling). Aug 26 21:45:45 AMD850@davey lpd: lpd startup succeeded Any help would be appreciated! John Davey |

Or have a look at /var/log/dmesg (i think) it should list the printer ports linux found at bootup which may be different to what /dev/lp links to. Just a guess as i'm in windows now, anyone want to swap modems :-). |
