| 17814 | 2001-08-30 01:03:00 | I am just wondering what peoples opinions are with buying or building your own computer. I have no experience at hardware installation, but would like to learn at some stage. Cheers JM |

| 17815 | 2001-08-30 02:42:00 | the no1 drawback of building your own pc is cost. there is no way you can match the big crowds on price. however the advantage is (providing you know what you are doing) you can build a far better pc and one that is tailored to you personally. main points- look at how you are going to use it. what os you are going to use. driver advailabilty. try and bulid a 'matched' system. have the right hardware for the software you use. look at the upgrade path, will the motherboard accept the next gen cpu? look at where the bottle necks are. can't see the point of buying the lasted ghz cpu and choking it with a poor motherboard insufficant ram and slow hardrives. look ats intels new p4 chipset that uses sdram. who in there right mind would put a 2ghz cpu with pc133 ram, it would crawl along. what a waste of good silicon. if you want to bulid a fast pc then use rdram or ddr. leave the sdram to the cheapo's. last thing- do you homework before commiting any dollars. nothing worse than buying noncompatable parts and not being able to return them. don't forget to do your bench marking afterwoulds to check that it is running as it should. |

One of the benifits is that you can upgrde it very easily compared to a major brand. One of the first things to do is to get an antistatic wrist strap or better an antistatic matt as static is lethal to various computer parts. Learn and enjoy it but don't be surprised when you have difficulties but as time goes by they get fewer. |
