| 18023 | 2001-09-02 09:14:00 | 'Meanwhile Christy has upgraded Windows and lost all my Outlook Express information up to last Friday. Is there any way I can retrieve it or is it lost forever? I had price lists and lots of letters I wanted(164 of them). Any ideas? It doesn't seem to have affected stuff on the desktop such as My Documents.' 1.That is the message from my daughter and I wouldn't have a clue. So any help would be most welcome 2. How would I backup email messages to a floppy ? In anticipation, many thanks reg harris |

| 18024 | 2001-09-02 18:29:00 | Cannot help with recovering lost mail, maybe someone can but to back up for the future, create a folder somewhere though you could use floppies but you would need a few, open Outlook, File, Folders, Compact All Folders, that will save everything to Windows>Applications>Identities>{7487659....}>Micr osoft>Outlook. It will be saved as *.dbx. Now copy and paste to a folder or floppy(s). For those wondering why I use a folder to save to, we back up selected data to CDRW once a week. | Guest (0) | ||

First thing to do is find were any new emails you get go to. To do this fire up Outlook express, and head over to the Tools > Options > Maintenance tab. From this pop-up you are looking for a button called 'Store location'. Here you will be presensted with a rather long location, but you will need to note it done. This address should look along the line of 'C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities\{B74F22C0-55C6-11D5-8FF9-00500418DB9F}\Microsoft\Outlook Express' What we are going to do now is tell outlook express to use this old Store location. Good thing you have wrote down the new Good thing you have wrote down the old store location!. From outlook Express now select File > Import > Messages. Now depending on your version of outlook express depends on what option you choose here. Click on 'Microsoft outlook express x and next(x being you revious version of outlook Express). You will now be asked for the store location, So now browse to 'C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities'. Here you should be presented with 2 folders with really long names. Noting the one you have noted down, open the other folder (The one thats not the same)and continue onto \Microsoft\Outlook Express. The old messages will now be imported to your new store loaction ! Jess |

| 18028 | 2001-09-24 04:28:00 | Gordon, I am extremely grateful for your suggestions, but I have another problem. I have copied the .dbx files to floppies. To see if I could get them back into OE to read, I renamed one folder and copied it to Outlook in the Windows (etc) directory. When I looked for it in OE, that folder was not listed in the Local Folders dir. So how do I transfer from floppy in order to read the messages ? reg harris |
