18224 2001-09-05 22:42:00 The other day I decided to tidy up the desktop a bit as the icons were getting a tad intrusive. So I did the right-click thing and brought up the menu, moved the cursor to the 'new' button to create a new folder, and up popped the 'illegal operation' message. I checked it out and it said that Internet Explorer (which wasn't open at the time) had caused the problem. When I closed the message, the little icons in the sys tray that indicate that the Norton antivirus software is OK & task scheduler is ready etc etc disappeared. I've done the reboot trick a few times, run some antivirus checks on IE and on the computer generally, but these turned up nothing & the problem persists. Is this something I should worry about, or should I just resign myself to having an untidy desktop? (Untidy 'analog' desk tops seem to work for a lot of people!)Thanks for your help,
Cheers,
HM.

18225 2001-09-06 04:58:00 I very much doubt you have a virus. The illegal operation you are receiving is not Internet Explorer but explorer.exe which is Windows Explorer. When this crashes I have found that some or all of the icons in the system tray vanish, although the programs is still running. To fix this you need to reboot your computer. To aviod this error, don't repeat the activity that causes the error. If this is unacceptable a reinstall of Windows will probably fix the problem. Guest (0)
