18314 2001-09-06 13:44:00 i have a 4yr old pc running win98se with 128mb. sometimes at start up if i check my system properties performance tab, it shows:-
128mb ram, resouces 94% free, file system Some filesare useing MS-DOS compatibility. and then in its own box,
Compatibility mode paging reduces overall performance. Drive C using MS-DOS mode file system.
Firstly what would cause this and how do i rectify it?
everything works ok just really slow unless i re boot to normal mode at which i only get 90% free resources.
thanks for any help given

18315 2001-09-07 01:22:00 'unless i re boot to normal mode' it sounds like you are booting into safe mode. Guest (0)
18316 2001-09-07 02:25:00 It sounds as though your system is loading some 16 bit DOS drivers instead of 32 bit Windows drivers.
Have a look at your autoexec.bat and config.sys files in the first instance to see if there are any DOS drivers being loaded, if so, remark them out with rem at the beginning of the line. Then re-boot and see what happens.

18317 2001-09-07 13:40:00 Your only supposed to run safe mode if your trying to fix something.

There is nothing wrong with having only 90% free system resources. You should only start worrying when it goes below 20% free.

18318 2001-09-07 15:56:00 when I refer too normal mode I simply mean that which is normal, not the MS DOS compatiblity 'MODE' paging or MS DOS 'MODE' file system, types of mode. Of course I'm not booting up and trying to run in safe mode, that would be asking for troubles
cheers.
