18290 2001-09-06 07:53:00 1. My PC is running rather sluggishly lately and I notice there is lots of disk activity going on(by the noise it is making).

Haven't run any maintenance for a couple of months. I use the maintenance program that comes with Windows 98. Tried to run it last night and again today and both times, it seems to be stucked at the defrag stag. The defrag counter shows 1% completed even though it had been reunning overnight - The defrag program had hung by then but the hard disk was till whirring away. The defrag was a bit better today going up to 3% completed. The 'Details' window of the defrag status dialog was completely empty(ie blank) when normally it would be like a honey comb showing all the clusters and how far the defrag has progressed. I don't know what to make of this.

2. I then thought I should do a virus check just in case. More problems - the N32ZIP.DLL and NAVW32.EXE are missing. I presume the Auto-Protect won't be working either. I use Norton Antivirus but unfortunately, I haven't got the source disks as it came
pre-installed. Is there anywhere I can download a copy of the 2 missing files ?

Please help. Thanks.

My guess is you have something (probably unwanted) running in the background.

To run defrag, try starting in safe mode (restart, and hold shift when it says starting win98). Then run defrag from there.

18293 2001-09-11 10:02:00 Sounds to me as if you could have errors on your drive, which would need to be fixed (with something like Scandisk) before Defrag will work. Usually the first about 10% of the progress of Defrag is it doing a test for errors as well, so if it crashes during this time, that could be your problem. The reason why the Details window is blank is because it hasn't got to the Defrag stage yet, so hasn't looked at the makeup of the drive. Guest (0)
