18279 2001-09-06 05:55:00 Years ago we added a 4 gig harddrive(partitioned into three drives) to our 800 mb computer. Recently I (perhaps foolishly) formated the harddrive and upon reinstalling windows the computer will only recognise the original harddrive. I have tried adding it in the control panel, pressing delete at startup and have found that the computer simply dosen't seem to recognise my second harddrive. I'm confused about which should be master or slave or what? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I have 4 gigs sitting there rotting! Guest (0)
18280 2001-09-06 06:04:00 It is strange that it doesn't recognise it at all. To check hard drives at a low level, I usually use FDISK at the command prompt for that sort of thing. I suggest you go in there and carefully review what it says it knows about the hard drive partitions (enquire, don't add or remove).
Then take it from there.
You shouldn't need to change slave and master jumpers unless there has been a physical hardware change. Maybe check cables and power. It is possible that the 4Gb beastie has decided to die, but seems an unlikely coincidence.
Good Luck, Rob C.
PS If you still can't find it, try looking under the sofa, I found the TV remote there the other day.

18281 2001-09-06 08:44:00 You didn't change versions on windows, 95a can only read FAT16 drives.

When you reformatted, did you move anything around inside?
Also does the new drive use an off board card?

As for the Primary/Master, on each channel (cable) one drive must be set as master, the other slave. The drive you want windows on should be set as master.

18282 2001-09-06 21:06:00 I did change windows version, from Windows 95a to Windows 98. However the computer didn't seem to recognise the second harddrive in dos before windows was reinstalled.

Im unsure whether it uses an off board card.

Thanks for your help!
