18445 2001-09-08 11:44:00 I have a new PIII and have installed a couple of Games on it (One an oldish Demo of Star Wars Pod Racer and the newer Star Wars Force Commander). I am using the original Win98 OS. Recently when I tried to start Force Commander I got the message 'Direct Draw Beta expired. Obtain Update'. The game eventually started but I get the message for a range of applications now...

Assuming this was because I had installed an old version of Direct X 7.0 I obtained Direct X 8.0 and installed that. Nothing. I tried a copy of direct X 8.0a still nothing.

There was othing in Add/Remove Programs I could use to remove the old version of Direct X.

I assume that somewhere in the system is a stray file that thinks an old version of Version 7.0 is there...how do I find and remove it???

Cheers

18446 2001-09-08 12:38:00 DirectX is a horrable thing to remove (I think there is an app that will do it).

Try running dxdiag.exe which will be either in c:\windows\system or c:\program files\directx

Also make sure you've updated your video drivers (and sound etc while your at it). The best place is usually the chipset makers homepage rather then the manufacturer.

18448 2001-09-08 23:09:00 Thanks for the suggestions. I have tried the changes to DX Diagnosis without much luck. I went to the gameplanet site and tried to download the DX unistall program but Ebunk.com is offline. Any idea where this program could be sourced from?

PS A shortcut to to the diagnosis program is to type dxdiag at the Start | Run ...

Cheers

18450 2001-09-10 07:24:00 Thanks for all the help. I finally got the DX Uninstaller and after a couple of deep breathes (Our techie told me Ver 8.0 was now embedded in the System and couldn't be removed) I finally ran the program and Yahoo it worked. I then reinstalled DX using the new version from MS and as usual got a message telling me this one should be updated! But at least the DirectDraw message is gone and I can run things properly.

Thanks again for all the help.
