18564 2001-09-10 05:49:00 Hi all

I'm having a problem with my cdrom drive not working very well when I copy data to the hard drive.

It seems to slow the whole machine down in bursts, so it'll freeze everything briefly then start working again. Every now and then it seems to freeze the system completely so I have to turn the power off and restart.

It seems to be running the CPU at full capacity. The CPU is a P3 1ghz chip on an Abit VH6T motherboard.

It's an HP9100 cd-rw drive running as master on the secondary IDE chain. The hard drive is a Seagate 20gig drive which is master on the Primary IDE chain.

So far I've had the problem under Win98 and WinME, which leads me to think it's a hardware problem.

Any suggestions?

18565 2001-09-10 07:57:00 The drives probably have DMA mode turned off, which means they use cpu power when they operate.

Under System Control Panel, device manager, CDROM.
Bring up the properties on your drive, and check DMA mode.
Do the same to your HDD (under Disk Drives).

You may need to install the drivers for your chipset before it will work properly (note: the checkbox does not always match the drives setting).

You may want to check your cdwriter manual to see if they recomend DMA mode as some cdwriters don't like it.

18566 2001-09-10 22:01:00 Thanks for the help. It was a problem with the DMA settings as you said.

The wrong drivers for the motherboard's chipset were installed so DMA wasn't working. I installed the correct ones last night, and everythings going fine now.

18567 2002-03-12 03:00:00 Do you have IE6 installed.
This sounds like a IE6 bug.
It freezes the machine on
Win 98/ME. XP works ok.
Try installing IE5.5
