18751 2001-09-13 10:37:00 While running Windows ScanDisk -47% into scan the process became hung up and after minutes of repetitive clicking, frozen screen etc I suffered the blue screen syndome. Restarting in Safe Mode I ran a DiskCleanup, complete ScanDisk then Defrag and have found bad 'clusters' around the 47% mark. My queries are;
What are they\how are they created?
Can I fix them?
Would running scan/defrag in normal mode still throw me out 47% of the way in scan?
My system: Acer Veriton 5100,
Pent.II 700Mhz, 128Mb RAM,
20 Gb QuantumFireball HDD,
Win 98SE OS
Cheers again Des TK

18752 2001-09-13 12:32:00 Try running it from dos by hitting F8 just before the win98 splash screen, and choosing command prompt only (or insert a boot disk).
Then type:

SCANDISK C: /AUTOFIX

The bad clusters are parts of the disk that have been corrupted. They are usually caused by not shuting down correctly, eg after a crash, power failure etc.

It may take a bit of time to fix them, so give it a while.
