18926 2001-09-16 11:22:00 problems started when trying to burn a cd. Made a couple of coasters initially, then tried the write tests which also kept failing, buffer underruns & communication failures. (easy CD creator 5/HP9100i). Checked all manuals & info I could find on the net, as well as drive connections. Decided to scandisk & defrag (although had done so only a week prior). Using Norton speed disk, but this time it came up with the error 'cannot run, your drive may be incorrectly configured). Decided to use windows defrag instead. This worked fine. Tried again on Nortons, same error message. Anyway, the CD writer would still not work (although direct cd does). Have uninstalled & reinstalled software etc to no avail. Have tried both hard drives to burn image, but Easy CD tells be it can't access either fast enough! I have no other problems with read or write access to these disks.
I did however check the hard disk using FDisk, and have discovered an error, where the logical partition does not match the Total disk space (seagate 30gig HD). The HD is set to auto in the bios, so don't know what else (except maybe reformat) to try & fix this. I would still not be convinced this would fix the cd writing anyway, as the slave drive also does not work. Any suggestion would be appreciated.
Running W98, PII 333, 160mb ram, 30gig Seagate & 4gig Quantum.

18927 2001-09-16 12:09:00 ok a few things to check- set the main harddrive (30gig i hope) to primary master. keep the 4gig off to start with. set the cd writer to secondary master(assuming you don't have another cd drive)
check jumbers both should be set to master.
check you have the proper motherboard drivers loaded correctly. check to see that DMA is enabled on both. note some cd writers don't like dma but try with it on to start with. run disk doctor/scan disk including surface check (this will take ages)
set a decent size minimum swapfile size.
and lastly (its getting to late to think) you may need to remove totaly the cd writing software and reinstall. sometimes the aspi drivers don't install properly.

18928 2001-09-17 01:03:00 I run the Norton equiv of scandisk and defrag immediately before I do a burn and then ensure all other programs as might run in background are disabled incl anti-virus, screen savers and power management etc. CTRL+ALT+DEL will show what might still be lurking there. Then I go pray and do NOT attempt to use the computer until the burn is finished. No doubt some of all these precautions are unnecessary but better than adding to my extensive coaster collection. My success rate is now up from close to zero to about 95 percent. Good luck. Guest (0)
18929 2001-09-18 09:31:00 Nortons scandisk is one of the progs that won't run. The windows one will, but does not help.
I already shut down everything, and never touch it once it's going.
