18919 2001-09-16 06:28:00 While trying to install Windows Me on my PC (Pentium II MMX 333khz, with 64MB Ram), it caused the whole system to crash. I previously had Windows 98 upgrade SE from Windows 95. For a time even the CD Rom would not read and I could only access the system through the floppy A Drive. When attempting to load other programs there were references to only being able to run on a specific version of MS DOS. As a last resort, I formatted the C drive thinking that I could reload Windows 95, but this would not work either (hoping to then upgrade to Win98 then Windows ME). I attempted to re-install Windows Me again but then it said it needed the full version of Windows 98 not the upgrade. I contacted Microsoft NZ who suggested that I had a hardware problem, particularly when the CD Rom wasn't working. Any suggestions? Guest (0)
18920 2001-09-16 07:04:00 For a start if you had 98se why bother to upgrade to ME.
Check that in the Bios 'Virus warning' is turned off while you are doing the upgrade.
I doubt that it is a hardware problem as you have already upgraded to 98se but it could be.
You did not say why you could not install 95. You may need dos CDRom drivers.

18921 2001-09-17 06:28:00 I bought a new computer in May and it came loaded with ME. It proved to be a nightmare - crashes, freezes, blue screens - constantly. Didn't like third party programmes at all.
Last week my local OEM replaced it with Win 98 2nd edition. Now no problems. Suggest you stick with 98.

18922 2001-09-28 20:52:00 Thanks for the prompt reply. Since the crash I have reformatted the C drive and it now reads the CDRom drive, so it wasn't a hardware problem. However after reformatting I still can't start with my original Windows95. 'setup found a compressed volume or a disk cache utility on your computer', but I didn't do any of that. Further on it says 'error SU-0013'.
At the end of it I should have stayed with Windows98.
