| 18834 | 2001-09-14 15:36:00 | I have a Celeron 533 which I attempted to put McAfee AV on. The install went Ok, but when I went to reboot, it got halfway through the Starting Windows screen, then locked up. This was with a fresh install of Windows, on a 20 Gb hard disk. I went into safe mode and un-installed it, then re-installed - same problem. So I tried to install PC Cilin instead. Same problem. Booting up in safe mode everything is Ok, and I have narrowed the problem to when Windows gets to the point where it loads either the Win.ini file or the System.ini file. Once I remove the software, all returns to normal. I tried using the 'Boot with interactive feedback' utility under MSCONFIG, but it doesn't tell me what part is crashing before it crashes, so it is of no help (surprise surprise). The DOS Scan part of McAfee works fine - it seems to lock-up when it gets to the Windows part. |

It was really anoying as it had been working fine for months. Maybe give that a try, although it is the opposite of your experience it may be worth a go. Rob C. |

I had this problem with Norton, and found that where it tried to install the AV had bad sectors on it, and constantly caused problems until I removed the AV. Seems it always wants to install it to the same place, even after a reformat. I think its something to do with always having the AV running, scanning every file... but I don't know. | Guest (0) | ||
