| 18808 | 2001-09-14 05:21:00 | I have a few largish files I want to transfer from a Win95 computer to a WinMe computer. I have a Laplink Parallel cable conecting the two computers LPT1 ports. The Win95 machine is running the DCC program and is listening as the Host when the WinM machine connects as the Guest using it's version of the DCC program. The following message then appears on simultaneously on both machines 'Status: Verifying user name and password' and shortly thereafter the WinMe machine displays 'Status: Parallel cable on LPT1 disconnected' whilst the Win95 then shows 'Status: Waiting for the Guest computer on LPT1'. The cable I am using is a DSE Laplink Parallel one sold as suitable for Direct Cable Connect. What gives? What names and passwords are the computers trying to verify? Is there a problem with this cable? Help. |

I'm not sure about the DSE Laplink cable, but you need to verify that the cable concerned is actually what is known as a 'Null-modem' cable and not just a serial to serial cable, otherwise DCC will never work. I have tried to get DCC working on many occasions, and I did succeed once, but when I went to use it again on the same two machines with the very same setup, it refused to play ball. Other times I have given up in desperation and used alternative means. A simple solution is to grab a spare hard disk, set it up on the machine where your files are, copy them across and then shift the drive to the target machine, and copy again. Simple and quick and no headaches. Another option is a Zip drive with either 100 or 250 Mb discs. Unfortunately the Windows Help Files do not give much support for DCC, none that is overly useful anyway. |

It is alot quicker than DCC, and alot less fussy. There are many 'link' programs available. I use PC-Linq, which came with my cable. Good transfer rates too. | Guest (0) | ||
