19183 2001-09-21 09:57:00 This is a re-post because the old message was stale (posted Mon 17th) and KO might not have seen my follow up to his advice.

OK KO
I'm not sure what ports I should be checking here. The Nokia connects direct to the ethernet connection (via the hub) and is actually a DSL Router not a modem at all. I just used the familiar name. Where do I go to find a port setting for an ethernet card? I thought that the 115K setting was only for serial port modems and I have already set that for my backup 56K dial-up modem which runs fine.

The 9.6K sounds familiar though. When I was using the other modem (which was not a router) the supplied diagnostics said 9600 in one particular data pane when running on Win98 but 10,000,000 when running W2K. Trouble is, I couldn't find any way of checking the setting then either.

I have done an online driver update for the network card and the answer was I am using the correct driver already. Even so, I did change the driver to the recommended alternative then changed it back when there was no difference.

I can't go to 100mbps on the ethernet connection because my hub will only run 10mbps and I think that is top speed for the Router too, but anyway, that is plenty fast enough. For example a NAV on-line update takes about 2 seconds for 300K on the W2K boxes and 10 MB is downloaded in zip time. There are no bottlenecks there.

Maybe it really is time to axe the network card but I'm still open to suggestions if there are any more coming.

19184 2001-09-21 11:51:00 first of all check the mtu and rwin values. u might what to try the lan cards own config/test ulilty. try a known card see if its the card at fault or the windows setup. Guest (0)
19185 2001-09-21 20:36:00 Sorry Jim I did miss your reply, I'm still a bit confussed. can you download from the other computers fast, is it only the internet that is slow? Guest (0)
19186 2001-09-22 09:03:00 Thanks OK and thanks to tweak'e too.

Everything is slow, internet and network. I don't have any software for the card and all I know about it is that Win98 identifies it as NE2000 compatible.

Data throughput is so choked that a 3.5MB file transfer between computers this afternoon (from W2K to Win98) was afternoon snooze material. The sending computer said it would take 2 minutes but the receiving computer had other ideas!

The problem I have is I can't find any diagnostic tool that can test the card and tell me if it is the problem or if I have some arcane setting maladjusted or turned off.

Years ago I had a similar problem with file transfer on an old 486 DX33(only it wasn't so old then and had a huge 8MB of RAM and a ginormous 230MB HDD!)

I was probably copying to a floppy or similar as I didn't have a network then and although I don't remember the precise details, I do recall that the answer was to disable some setting that was doing virtually byte by byte checks on the data. Might even have been an AV program.

I don't want to buy a new card if all I have to do is check some hidden settings, hack a registry entry that is set restrictively or run a bit of shareware. Unfortunately SiSoft Sandra won't check networks or IP in the free version.

This will be my last call on this one as I'll have to give up if I can't find anything to test or check.

19187 2001-09-22 20:21:00 Jim, you really need to take the card out of the computer, and identify it. sometimes on network cards the make is stamped on the chrome piece of metal, as viewed from the rear of the computer. or some letters and numbers printed on the curcuit board, failing that you can use the chip numbers and letters. Using these you can find the manufacturer on the net and download the correct driver and most likely a utility that will test the speed of your card.I wouldn't give up on the card just yet, as it could be just one small setting that is causing your problem. 19188 2001-09-22 23:24:00 Thanks KO

I'll pull the card during the week and have a look at it. I remember reading something a while back about identifying hardware from numbers on the card. I think there was a particular site you used for this. If anybody knows the URL I'd be please to have it.

It will be about a week before I come back on this (pressure of work) so I'll put up a new post to update progress.

Thanks very much for the advice.
