19099 2001-09-19 23:44:00 I am asking this question in this forum because it seems to me that this forums regular users are the most likely to know the answer.

Is anybody aware of plans to install the 'Carnivore' systems or something similar in this country in light of the recent terrorist attacks in the US?

If the government of NZ was asked to roll out this system nationwide would they inform us?

19102 2001-09-20 06:15:00 Carnivore is the code name for the program that the FBI use to give the agency access to the online/e-mail activities of suspected criminals. It is part of the DragonWare Suite.

Carnivore is basically a packet sniffer. (Essentially, a packet sniffer is a program that can see all of the information passing over the network it is connected to. As data streams back and forth on the network, the program looks at, or 'sniffs,' each packet).

Dont worry this technology is not applied on just anyone. It is only setup to monitor suspects and this is done at the ISP.

This is pretty much the bacic's of what Carnivore is.

It relationship to the other question does N.Z Govt.plan to install Carnivore. I cant anwser this as its Top Secret

19104 2001-09-20 21:37:00 Installing systems like 'carnivore' is justifiable given the current circumstances but ONLY if a system of public checks annd balances is in place and can be used by the citizens of the country to check on its government.

Installing systems like 'carnivore' in secret is as bad as the acts it meant to protect us from and I for one intend to know if its happening one way or the other and fight for a system of public checks and balances to be put in place.

All intelligent people can understand we are going to lose some of the many freedoms we have in our democracies as a result of the tragedy in the US but any democratic government removing freedoms secretly is bordering on destroying the very democracy it claims such measures are protecting.

I bought this up in this forum because they rolled out 'carnivore' in the 24 hrs after the atrocity in the US with no mention in the press at all. I found out it was done from a couple of forums similar to this one in the US where the technicians who were asked to help install it in every ISP in the US actually talked about it. So I thought some of the techs who hang here might know and tell the truth about the situation here in NZ.

19106 2001-09-21 01:33:00 Surely though if one was to start some sort of undercover snooping operation, they wouldn't go around telling people? It would be like the police ringing all the dope growers in an area prior to a raid... Guest (0)
19107 2001-09-21 01:43:00 ...the New Zealand Government is already involved in the development and use of this Carnivore 'system' - and has been for a number of years along with the UK, Australia and Canada.

Users wishing to evade this snooping might be interested in the following:

Any reasonable analysis must conclude that terrorists, and those whom Carnivore is designed to monitor, are unlikely to be worried by the system.

19108 2001-09-26 07:58:00 PGPing your e-mail etc makes it pretty useless for most stuff.

I'm more concerned with a law like the UK's RIP act (have a search on www.theregister.co.uk).

They expect ISPs to keep a seven year record of your internet use incase you commit a crime.
