1255586 2012-01-23 06:37:00 I switched over to AMEX from Mastercard due to the higher air mileage .

When I try to enter my PIN - it says "CARD TYPE ERROR" .

But when I just press credit and enter and sign for it at the end - that works .
This was at the Shell Station .

I have gotten a replacement card . I have also double checked my card and PIN at the bank .

Anybody . .

1255587 2012-01-23 08:30:00 We've been on AMEX for years and have never been able to use a PIN.
I think it's because AMEX is not a credit card, but a debit card.
We pay by direct credit each month.

But the bonuses are excellent.
We get Farmers' $100 cards.
We renewed the Manchester for our whole house this way (towels, sheets, pillows, etc).

1255588 2012-01-23 09:02:00 Correct you can't put a pin on AMEX, hence I never bother with mine unless it's an internet purchase, plus some places don't accept it. Alex B (15479)
1255589 2012-01-23 10:44:00 Yup~ just sign, pin don't seem to work on AMEX. Their rewards program are pretty good too. SKT174 (1319)
1255590 2012-01-23 21:18:00 It's been one of my pet hates with Amex for years and asking them to implement it goes on deaf ears. I just use mine for auto payments these days..
You can get a PIN from Amex but it will only work in an ATM..

1255591 2012-01-23 22:14:00 Cheers guys :thanks:

Well they even sent me a new card not realising it doesn't work with a PIN.

Mine is with GlobalPlus as it's $100 for 1.5pts which is faster than AMEX's own cards.
I found the AMEX's own cards can be pricey to join their optional rewards programme ($50?) and their double points turbo programme has expired - only valid for clients who joined prior to March 2010 and theirs a extra $99 annual fee for that.

Is it a show stopper? Or is this a rare occurrence?

So far touch wood :p
My ISP, supermarket, petrol station, and warehouse stationery support them. I also like to know who doesn't support them.

PS. Kiwibank has a CC without annual fees for backup - provided you use it once per 3 months. I find the smallest purchase :D

1255594 2012-01-23 23:44:00 I used to be in a business accepting cc's and Amex were the least attractive from a merchant's pov.
Highest %, monthly min fee even if not used & least no. of customers with it. I ditched them pretty fast.

I wouldn't use it as my only card put it that way - it is attached to my Westpac Visa as a faster way to get reward points (two cards for one account). As Fred has said merchants don't like it. Visa and Mastercard are the way to go for most supported.
