19306 2001-09-23 21:42:00 I have just installed the Trillian instant messaging program on my Win95 / P133 laptop. I am now getting a warning message 'This DHCP client was unable to obtain an IP network address from a DHCP Server. Do you want to see future DHCP messages? Yes / No' What does this mean, and should I press 'no' and ignore the message Guest (0)
19307 2001-09-24 06:35:00 TCP/IP which is the Internet protocol requires each node (computer) to have a unique address. This address/number can be permanently assigned in a network, or dynamically assigned by a DHCP server. If you are not connected through a local network (if you use a modem and dial an ISP), when you start up your computer, and there is no network to ask 'Please, Mr DHCP, assign me an address', the messaging application will complain, correctly that there is noone out there. You don't want to see such messages UNLESS you are using DHCP. And you should not run a DHCP client unless you need it. I suspect that there is an option you can set which tells the application NOT to use DHCP. It will send network packets forever ... this may cause slowing down of your sessions when you are logged on. Guest (0)
19308 2001-09-24 06:42:00 Thanks Graham for your reply.I have removed the Trillian program but am still getting the message, all the time the computer is on. (I also had to install the Winsock2 update) How can I disable DHCP? What happens if I just press 'No' on the warning message. I guess this just disables the message, not the problem. Guest (0)
