19547 2001-09-28 08:11:00 I have been gifted an ex-office P.C. It is loaded with M.S. Me but is password protected. How do I get round this to format the hard disk prior to re-installing Windows

Thanks Iain

19549 2001-10-02 07:06:00 If it's the BIOS password, you will have to a) search the
internet for a list of BIOS passwords. ( such things exist) or b) open the box and
(1) look hard for jumpers labeled 'Batt' or 'BIOS erase'. Or the manual for the mother board may tell you ...
Most Compaq boxes I have seen tell you on a label inside the cover. If there is no appropriate jumper, you have th remove the battery. Leave it out overnight, plug it in again and get into the BIOS setup and do an auto config.
Also set the BIOS passwords,
even explicitly to nonexistent,
and save them. The BIOS memory can remember an old password! It can let you in once, and then refuse the next time.
