19629 2001-09-29 12:20:00 Sorry that should read Windows 98.
Sometimes the computer at work, just by itself tries to read the A: drive, even when there is nothing in the drive to read/write, every so often when nobody is in the room you can hear the computer goes BONK BONK BONK BONK BONK BONK BONK BONK BONK BONK you know, you must of heard it before, when you forgot to put in a disk and tried to read or write to it.

Is this a special feature of Windows 98 or can you disable it ?

19630 2001-09-29 13:05:00 If you've been running dos apps from the a: drive then windows makes PIFs for them which can cause it. Try deleting anything in C:\WINDOWS\PIFS

It may also be caused by a virus scanner or maintence tasks like disk cleanup that are scheduled to run.

Stop Windows95/98 From Randomly Searching the Floppy Drive
This problem is not confined to the use of Explorer, or necessarily on systems with Norton Navigator installed. This problem is not caused by an intial access to the floppy, as rebooting does not solve the problem.
The following are possible solutions to this problem:
1. Clear the documents menu.
2. Clear Unwanted Entries from the Start Menu's Run Command.
3. Check for any viruses on your system (some users have reported the NEUVILLE virus)
4. Search your hard disk for all .PIF that point to programs on a floppy drive
5. Take out LocalLoadHigh=1 from your MSDOS.SYS file.
If you're using Norton Navigator '95:
6. Clear Norton Navigator's Run history (or disable the Run history all together).
7. If you're noticing this behavior with only a particular applications, you must clear the History List for that application.
8. Download the bug fix from ftp.symantec.com.
Other programs known to cause this problem:
9. McAfee Antivirus. Configure it to NOT scan A:.

19632 2001-09-29 23:22:00 It could also be Microsoft Office's Find Fast, which checks all drives periodically and builds indexes of what files you have. A 'feature' that is really just a waste of resources.

Look here to disable it
