19636	2001-09-29 10:21:00	Floppies often fail when track 0 goes bad, and it becomes unreadable/unwriteable. Here's where good old DOS comes in (dont snigger). If you browse through the msdos/diskutil section of the Simtel archives at http://www.simtel.net there are several DOS programs that attempt to recover data from bad floppies, including: badflpy4.zip; track0.zip; drs120.zip Being Dos programs they are of course very small, so you could download all these and try them. 19637	2001-10-02 07:56:00	Scandisk will destructively repair the disk. You would be lucky to get a good file. I would be inclined to try the old DOS progs: at least they will try to read the disk, not 'FIX' it.They come from a time when a single floppy cost $15 at Dick Smith's, so there was an incentive to keep using a flakey disk. Thus a need for programmes to pick off the good stuff. A commercial programme you might find is NDD: the Norton Disk Doctor. Ask at your local PC Users Group! Even the DOS version of NU (Norton Utility), (with the /m option)can pick out sectors. Of course, the old rule still applies: One copy is not safe. Two copies are not a 'backup'. Three copies, one in a different place, is a bit better.	Guest (0)
