19597 2001-09-28 22:51:00 Ran defrag. from safe mode successfully. Thankyou. Question: Why did I have to run it from there when up to now it has successfully performed from its current stance? Guest (0)
19598 2001-09-29 01:28:00 Safemode basically starts your computer with a minimal set of drivers and bypasses certain startup files so you have a basic but functioning windows environment in which to try fix any problems you may be having.

As to why defrag would now only function in safemode, well theres just less chance of interference from a recently installed program such as a virus scanner or a change in your windows configuration.

19600 2001-09-29 07:52:00 As m r said its probably a recently installed program and is the simplest solution.

I run defrag in safe mode anyway because it does a more through defrag as there are less open files which can't be defragged.

19601 2001-09-29 08:10:00 Install a small programme called 'Enditall' Just type enditall into any search engine & you will find it.
Use it when installing programmes-defragging-disc scanning or any time you need to close down all background applications. It's an essential item and so easy to use.
