19860 2001-10-02 23:25:00 Hey, I'm getting there, slowly setting up my puter to also have Linux on it.
I'm having a few problems though, and am hoping the people who have helped me can help me again. The problems are:

*My modem - Linux can't find it. I've done a 'cat /proc/pci', and it can see the modem, echoing:
=============================
Bus 0, device 18, function 0:
Serial controller: Rockwell International HCF 56k V90 FaxModem (rev 1).
IRQ 10.
Master Capable. Latency=64.
Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xe9000000 [0xe900ffff].
=============================
But I don't know what to do from here - suggestions please :)

*Lilo defaults to booting up Linux, despite me setting it to default to windows, any suggestions to make windows (dos), my default Lilo option?

*Is there an easy way to set up a network? Have two computers, one is 192.168.0.2, and the other 192.168.0.213 - both will connect to the net through this computer, but firstly I need to be able to connect to them.

*My TNT2 card doesn't appear to be being used fully - it's running at 1024x768, but my refresh rate appears fairly low - more then likely 60Hz, and it's not good on my eyes. How do I up it to 75Hz? Also, is it worth downloading Nvidia's reference Linux drivers?

*Finally, I find I'm quite often logging out and back in as root, is there an easy way so that KDE thinks I'm root? 'su root' doesn't appear to work.

Thanks alot,
Jonathan Giles

19861 2001-10-03 04:13:00 1. haven't tried internam modems...
2. don't use LILO. (from dos,
fdisl /mbr). IN Linux, look in /boot for the kernel file (vmlinuz, bzImage ... the biggest file there). Copy it to the DOS partition. Get loadlin.exe off your distribution disk (in dostools?) onto your DOS partition. Then make a .BAT file which runs loadlin to load that file. ('man loadlin' will tell you what you need). Or just 'dd if=/boot/vmlinuz of=/dev/fd0 bs=72k' onto a floppy and pop that in and reboot when you want Linux.

19862 2001-10-03 04:16:00 Not sure about all questions, though to start to windows (default) try reinstalling LILO with the command 'liloconfig' and, using the expert option, add your dos drive to the lilo.conf file before linux.
Alternatly you could just edit the lilo.conf file using pico or similar.

To change the refresh rate, use XF86Setup program to reconfigure your monitor.

Cheers,
Adrian

19863 2001-10-03 04:23:00 3. to network two computers,
edit /etc/hosts to contain (each) as well as its own IP address and name and alias, and the 127.0.0.0 loopback ip,
the IP address and name and alias of the other.
Then run a (crossed) UTP cable between the two, or connect both to a hub, or put them on a length of thinnet cable. That should let you telnet and ftp between the two ... then it gets complicated. If you get 'connection refused' ,
you'll have to enable the startup of probably in.telnetd
again, yopu''l have to read the FMs. The HOWTO on networking is good. Study it.
aand all the HOWTOs in /usr/doc/
4. clever cards .. check the FMs.
5. To su to root just 'su' and it will prompt for the supervisor password. When finished, just 'exit' or '^D',
back to the user login. From su you can 'su username' and you'll be that user, but probably with the root privs.

19864 2001-10-03 04:50:00 Hi again, to make windows your default os to boot you have to edit /etc/lilo.conf

where is says

default=linux

change it to the label for windows which is by default dos

eg

default=dos

then rerun lilo

/sbin/lilo

you will see all the labels listed for your boot options with a * beside the default one

eg

linux
dos *

as for the modem remember under linux the com ports start at 0 so that could be your problem

com1 = ttyS0
com2 = ttyS1 etc

19866 2001-10-03 04:55:00 I've found out that my modem is an HCF kind, which doesn't have any drivers for it, so i'm gonna have to replace it with another modem sometime. Guest (0)
