| 19972 | 2001-10-03 23:56:00 | Have just downloaded a programme called 'Registry First Aid' It finds all the invalid files in the Registry and gives the option to remove them. The mere mention of the word 'Registry' tends to send me into a mild panic attack, - I just can't bring myself to remove the 164 invalid files it found.Has anyone had some experience with this programme? - I just need some reassurance that I am doing the right thing.Would be very grateful for some advice, - thanks. These are usually left by old programs that have been unistalled or files that have been deleted. Removing these entries can reduce the size of the registry and sometime even speed boot up times. It is quite safe to delete them. If this program gives you the option of backing up the registry keys before it deletes them then I would urge you to do so. Otherwise you can manually back up these registry files by making copies of system.dat and user.dat in the windows folder (to see these files set windows to view hidden and system folders). It is always best to be over cautious when playing with the registy. | Guest (0) | ||

You can manually put in a place a back-up, by going into MS-DOS mode, and typing 'Scanreg'. This will scan your registry, and you should come up to a button that says 'View Back-ups' or similar. You can now choose a back-up, which is usually of the past few days, and then replace the current Registry with a backed up one. |
