19960 2001-10-03 10:37:00 I've been told that it is illegal to access some web sites or to have some sorts of things on my PC (e.g., child porno). Can anybody tell me exactly what the law is? I depend on my PC for business and cannot afford to have it carted away by the cyber-police. Are interent providers monitored for accesses to illegal sites? Guest (0)
19961 2001-10-03 10:51:00 Are you for real. You've got bigger problems than losing your computer - take a hike mate! Guest (0)
19962 2001-10-03 11:04:00 Pop on down to your local constabulary and ask them if it is legal to have child porn on your computer - see what happens.....

Basically accessing the sites themself is not illegal, but obtaining material from the site such as downloaded pictures and/or written material and storing this on your hard drive could be classed as objectionable. Bear in mind that your history and cache will often store details of the browsed web pages even if you don't download any pictures etc

If you think what you have is illegal, then it probably is. Look here for NZ Statute:

19963 2001-10-03 11:56:00 I don't think it is me that has a problem. Guest (0)

19965 2001-10-03 23:58:00 Each to their own but I think you could've used a better example than child porn. Unless, of course, you enjoy child porn then you have bigger problems than whether it's illegal or not. Guest (0)
19966 2001-10-04 01:28:00 Basically I think anything in the way of child porn is just plain wrong (and illegal). Other things would be:

Software installed on your computer that you don't own (ie that copy of windows 2000 you borrowed from a mate or downloaded from the net)

Any plans to do things illegal (ie your plot to kill the PM)

Good Luck
JM

PS By the way if you've got child porn on your computer I hope ya get done for it.

19967 2001-10-04 02:06:00 I guess I should have explained more. During the school holidays my teen-age son has been using my computer to look at web sites. More-or-less by accident I found he had gone to some porn sites (not specifically child porn I think). I just want to be sure that what he is doing is legal. So I need to know what the law says. 19969 2001-10-04 13:46:00 i didn't pick him as haveing porn, but rather used it as an example. everyone seems quick to jump on someone rather than reading what the question asks.
just think a bit more about the questions rather than trying to defend your own insecurities. helping does not mean persicution
