19983 2001-10-04 02:02:00 What is a hex editor. And where can I get a simple
one?

A hex editor can be downloaded from any of the following sites:

www.softcircuits.com

19985 2001-10-04 02:39:00 A Hexadecimal number is a 6 letter/number that contains numbers 0-9 and letters a-f. A simple example is the colours for backgrounds and text in Web Browsers. If you look at the source you'd notice numbers and letters representing colours, i.e. #c0c0c0 which is silver grey.

Files on a computer are generally made up of Hexadecimal numbers, so a Hex editor allows you to edit them through these sets of letters/numbers. Sometimes you can change one hex number in a file to activate special (hidden) features, I think you can edit SimCity 2000 cities using a Hex Editor to give you lots more money.

Be careful though. You can render files useless if you play around with their hex codes.

You can probably try searching download sites like Download.com for hex editors. Here: download.cnet.com
this is a search for hex editors at Download.com, all the free ones and sorted descending by rating.

Hope this helps.
